A Day in the Life
Athlone Community College revels on Junior Cert successes - 23 September 2008

Tears of joy and ecstatic smiles adorned the faces of students at Athlone
Community College on Wednesday last. With students surpassing predicted
grades and truly celebrating their achievements - it was a momentous occasion
for all concerned.
Among the high achievers was Mark Roche who hails from Glasson. Mark is
the son of Jim and Grainne Roche and is currently actively involved in
the Transition Year Programme. Mark enjoys Public Speaking and Debating.
He is also a keen sportsman and an active member of Athlone Boat Club
and Athlone Basketball Club. We wish Mark every success and we are sure
that he will be a great addition in the future to the field of Engineering.
Donal Sweeney also celebrated success and is pictured with Mr. Val O Connor,
Principal and Eileen Donohoe Deputy Principal. Donal is the son of Tony
and Kathleen Sweeney Creaghduff, Coosan. Donal sat thirteen subjects for
his Junior Cert. and six of those subjects were practical subjects. He
obtained a grade A in Woodwork, Metalwork, drawing and technology. What
an outstanding achievement for a talented young man who hopes to pursue
a career in the area of Mechatronics Donal commented:"I worked really
hard, I am shocked and delighted".

Nathan Carney was delighted with his superb performance He hopes to pursue
a career in medicine. Nathan is the son of John and Maria Carney and hails
from Kiltoom. His hobbies include: swimming, reading, traveling and cycling.He
hopes to pursue a career in medicine.
Naomi Lennon achieved remarkable results 6 As and 4 Bs. She is the daughter
of Breege and John Lennon from Barrymore. Her hobbies include: swimming,
piano and basketball. Naomi hopes to pursue a career in Accountancy /
Business and we have no doubt that she will be successful in her future
whatever path she chooses.
Claire Gibbons scored: 5 As and 4 Bs
Claire is the daughter of John and Celine and hails from Garnafailagh,
Coosan. Claire is a keen swimmer and recently participated in the Community
Games at Mosney. She also won a gold medal as part of the Coosan variety
group. Claire hopes to pursue her career in the area of Business.
Michelle Mc Hugh:She achieved 6 As and 4 Bs
Michelle hails from Retreat Park. She enjoys dancing and is a member of
Dance Zone. She also enjoys basketball and is a keen piano player. She
intends to pursue a career in Medicine or Business and with her ambitious
nature we are sure she will.
James Roche scored 9 As and is over the moon with his achievement and
we are very proud of him too. We wish James every success and look forward
to hearing from him in the arena of public speaking and debating. We are
justifiably proud of him as we are of all 161 students who achieved unprecedented
results in this years Junior Cert. Exam. Well done to you all!

Eoin
Fallon Eoin was one of three accountancy
students studying at University College Dublin to receive awards from
the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) recently.The
Institute made the awards to the top three students who completed the
Advanced Management Accounting examination at UCD. Eoin received the joint
second award. Eoin was the recipient of the School's Award for Academic
Excellence 2004.

Colm O'Faith
Heartiest congratulations to Ethan Byrne on his
outstanding achievement in obtaining nine A's and one B in Junior Cert.
2005. Ethan is currently engrossed in his Transition Year Course.

Patrick Doran
Patrick Doran, who was a member of the Connacht U18 Rugby team that toured to Reading in England recently. Patrick plays his club rugby with Buccaneers.
Brendan Gibbons
Brendan Gibbons, 1st year,
became the first swimmer from Connacht to win eight medals at the Division
I Irish Age Group Championships in Limerick recently. Brendan won four
gold medals and four silver. A truly remarkable achievement.

John O'Rourke
John O'Rourke, 6th year,was a member of the Irish Kayaking team that competed at the World championships held recently at Mundaka, Spain. John finished a credible 7th in the K1 class and was the top ranked Irish Junior, a fabulous achievement.
