Gaelic Football – Kieran Hunt Cup (Oct 09)

Up to 150 first and second year students took part in the Kieran Hunt Cup, Gaelic Football competition named after a former teacher at the college. The competition, organised by coaches Chris Forde and Eunan Martin was won by a team captained by Eoin McCormack defeating a team captained by Nigel Kelly after a superb final. Indeed only one point separated the teams when referee James McGrath called a halt after a splendid match (4-10 to 3-12).

The cup was presented by Val O’Connor, Principal, who spoke of being delighted with the high standard of football on view. Without doubt the future of Gaelic football is assured in Athlone Community College. All final participants were presented with sports jackets and medals.

Brendan Gibbons

On Friday, Nov 20th last, Brendan competed in the Men’s Senior 1500m freestyle swimming competition in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. Brendan was one of the youngest competitors in the event.Brendan who swims for the Athlone Swim club, won the event after swimming a grueling 60 lengths of the pool. This is a truly remarkable achievement s for someone as young as Brendan. The 2nd place swimmer was also a young competitor aged just 18. Brendan has won numerous accolades and titles over the past few years and we have no doubt that his list of accomplishments will continue to grow for many years to come. With the next Olympics to be held in London in 2012, who knows what the future holds for this Athlone Sporting starlet. We could yet see Brendan on the Olympic Stage representing Ireland. All in the Community College are proud of his achievements and we wish him continued success.

Karate Champion – John Sullivan (Summer 09)

John Sullivan (5th year) came 2nd in the ‘Itosu-ryu’ world Karate Championships in Kuala Lumpur this summer. John’s second place in ‘Kumite’ which is a type of Japanese sparring was a phenomenal success for a Western European. 1st place was taken by a Japanese native of the art! John received a generous sized silver medal for his efforts and credits his coach Mr Leo Mulvanney with his success. Mr. Mulvanney has always been the inspiration behind John’s achievements. John spoke well of his overall Malaysian experience and was impressed by the courtesy and respect that is so much a part of the Asian culture.
