Athlone Community College Annual Student Awards Hodson Bay Hotel Tuesday 12th May

Amid much pomp and ceremony the staff, students and parents of Athlone Community College were entertained by M.C. extraordinaire Mr. Kieran Duffy, teacher at the College. Mr.Gearóid O Brádaigh C.E.O. Westmeath V.E.C. also addressed the audience and explained that he was inspired by the song ‘’there’ll be days like this’’ written by Van Morrisson. He went on to explain that tonight was a day like this for Athlone Community College and he paid tribute to the fantastic work being carried out in the school both in the curricular and extra curricular sphere.

Bank of Ireland Student of the Year : Packie Bonner(FAI Technical Director), Eileen Donohoe Deputy Principal, David Mc Hugh male student of the Year, Dermot Horan Manager of Bank of Ireland and sponsor, Caoimhe Mc Manus female student of the Year, Val O Connor School Principal.

Mr. Val O’ Connor school Principal paid tribute to his teaching staff and their endeavours in all aspects of school life. He explained that the recipients of awards represented the student body and that all students could aspire to these awards.

The final speaker and guest of honour for the evening was Packie Bonner FAI Technical Director and former Republic of Ireland senior international goalkeeper and reknowned for his contribution to the World Cup ’90 and indeed the Charlton era. Bonner referred to his own school days and explained that school days are ‘something unique’. He emphasised the need to’ treasure the moments’ . He explained that the emphasis on sport at A.C.C. was unique and ‘’those are the things that will make your life into the future’’. The moral of the presentation was that being humble admidst achievement is important ‘keep your feet firmly on the ground’’. He also wished the outgoing 6th years well in ‘’ the University of life’’ ‘’what you have done in this school will help you to take that forward’’.

Students received awards across many areas from sporting , cultural, attendance and conduct to academic achievement.
