Fun Fresher’s Day at Athlone Community College

Over 400 students from the local primary schools came to the Fresher’s Day at Athlone Community College on Thursday 8th December. Sixth Class students enjoyed a fun filled interactive day. This introduction to secondary school gave students the opportunity to experience different subjects and activities available at Athlone Community College.

The visiting students participated in ‘taster’ classes in a wide range of practical and academic subjects, and in activities as varied as debating, PowerPoint making in I.T. class, smoothie making in Home Economics, singing in German and French and Computer Aided Design in Technical Graphics. Students also made Christmas star decorations in Woodwork and dog tags as well as key rings in Metalwork class. Other subjects students experienced were Science, Art, Business, Physical Education and Music.

They also participated in a dance work shop based around our college musical production of Grease. Following an address form the Principal of the school Mrs Eileen Donohoe the young pupils enjoyed a musical performance from Laura M. Kelly and college rock/pop band Street Light as well as a PowerPoint presentation on the sporting and extra-curricular activities available in the school.

This fun filled day provided the students with a valuable opportunity to experience many aspects of second level education at Athlone Community College while sampling form the wide selection of subjects available at the college.
Sixth class students and their parents/guardians are invited to attend the Open Night on Tuesday 10th January 2012.
