World Maths Day

 Talented Youth Recipients

Four First Year students, Gabrielle Jackson, Kevin Seery, Mary Sheehan and Darragh Lennon were awarded a CTY Ireland scholarship to Dublin City University’s Summer Academic Programme. Throughout the month of July, the students attended courses in Science, Mathematics and Humanities.

 

 

UCC Law Essay Writing Competition Winner

Congratulations to Gavin Ward and Niall Guinan who both came first in their individual categories in the UCC Law Essay Writing Competition. Gavin wrote on ‘Children’s Rights’ while Niall wrote on ‘Civil Partnerships’, both hugely topical issues in modern Ireland. 

 

 

All-Ireland Mental Health Public Speaking Team 2011

Remarkably for the second year in a row students from Athlone Community College passionately and informatively spoke their way to the All-Ireland finals in the Mental Health Public Speaking Competition in Trinity College Dublin. Athlone Community College would like to congratulate this year’s Junior Gael Linn Team on their wonderful achievement of reaching the All-Ireland Final of the Gael-Linn Debating Competition 2012 under the tutelage of their mentor Ms Eileen McEvilly.

They have followed on admirably from last year's Junior Gael Linn team who also were All-Ireland finalists under their mentor Ms Aileen Keena. They were Junior Certificate students - Kate Donohue (Capt), Megan Lennon and Oisín Murphy.

Green Flag Success

We are delighted to announce that Athlone Community College is the first Post Primary School in Athlone to be awarded the Green Schools Flag for ‘Litter and Waste Management’ by Green-Schools, known internationally as Eco-Schools. The Green School Committee worked tirelessly alongside The Environmental Officers, Mr James McGrath and Mr Joe Mulvihil, with the singular aim of improving our global environment.

Athlone Community College has also been awarded ‘The Tidiest Secondary School’ in Athlone for the second year running by Athlone Tidy Towns. Town Mayor, Cllr. Alan Shaw remarked that both achievements were proof that as a school we are fulfilling our mission statement by ‘fostering an appreciation of … the greater Global Environment’.

 

 



All-Ireland Title for Junior Certificate Woodwork Project

Fifth Year student, Kyle Barr has received second place in the Materials Technology Woodwork Junior Certificate Project 2010. Under the guidance of his teacher Mr. Tony Sweeney, Kyle produced a clock with Celtic design. Both Kyle and Mr. Sweeney will attend an award ceremony in Dublin in March where Kyle will be presented with this prestige award.

All Ireland Public Speaking and Debating Champions 2010

Our school has the unique distinction of having won both the Concern All Ireland Debating Competition and The Mental Health Public Speaking competition in the same year (2010)
The Debating team consisted of Michelle McHugh, Mark Roche, Sorcha McManus, and Gavin Ward while the Public Speaking team was Caroline Dowling, Aoife Coyle and Maggie Wallace.
As a result of their wins the Concern team visied Rwanda, accompanied by Principal Eileen Donohoe and The Public Speakers visited Brussels accompanied by Mr.Chris Forde, Debating and Public Speaking mentor.
The Concern All Ireland title has been won by the school three times. It was first won in 2007 and also in 2008 and 2010.
The school has also won numerous Soroptimist local titles (Marie Connolly 2006, Bronwyn Reid Mc Dermott 2009 and 2010, Sorcha McManus 2011) and were All Ireland finalists in The Mental Health Public Speaking competition in 2011 with the team comprising Laura Walsh, Laura Ray, Ann Curley and Ciara Murray.
