School Debating

Debating has been a constant source of excitement in the recent history of Athlone Community College and this year has been no different. We have

as ever had the privilege to be part of Concern Worldwide’s debating competition and had enormous success getting to the national top 16, losing out by a narrow defeat in Castlebar to Davitt College only last week. The team that took part were captained by Kamile Zmakaite – the wonderful team of Siofra Connolly, Mark O’Connor and Ciarán Rafter.

We have also had the great fortune of getting to the All Ireland final in the esteemed Soroptimist competition this year, with Kamile Zmakaite representing our school in the national finals last weekend.

The NUIG schools competition has also created much buzz in our school this year with Catherine Costello and Kamile Zmakaite winning the regional finals. The All Ireland will take place in April and best of luck is extended to them both.

A huge level of gratitude and thanks is owed to Mr Chris Forde and Mrs Jennifer Leonard for their excellent work with all the teams this year – the hard work and success of these students has been a credit to our school.
